Miguel Angel Ortíz Bonilla: Permanence and Time

Permanence and Time is a series that talks about the flow of ideas, and perhaps of moods. Of the natural environment -the desert – and its presence in the identity and processes of change.  Here is the genealogy of the series.  It is not concluded, in fact, I have delved back into it a short time ago.

The series Time and permanence is an approach to the semi-desert landscape,

It is to build an environment to reflect on the culture of our moment, the transformed nature, and the architectural symbols in the middle of the landscape.

“I like the stars. It’s the illusion of permanence, I think. I mean, they’re always flaring up and caving in and going out. But from here, I can pretend…I can pretend that things last. I can pretend that lives last longer than moments. Gods come, and gods go. Mortals flicker and flash and fade. Worlds don’t last; and stars and galaxies are transient, fleeting things that twinkle like fireflies and vanish into cold and dust. But I can pretend…”

What are nodes as Miguel titles the above painting? They are a point at which lines or pathways intersect or branch; a central or connecting point. In botany, the part of a plant stem from which one or more leaves emerge, often forming a slight swelling or knob

The heads have several senses but usually they are the presence of the historical – they are visual references to periods of the history of the culture.

The heads that appear are part pre-Hispanic tradition. Like the Olmecs.

Never beheaded. Maybe emerging. Like medieval bafomets. Maybe ghosts? A boy watching on the edge of the mesa.
